Standard IV
Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility

Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.

  • Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.

  • Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.

  • Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.

  • Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools.
Reflection

Several projects in the MSIT program have included this standard on researching how to teach students the correct usage of digital information and technology. I have also gained a lot of insight on how to model digital etiquette and social interactions through different projects. I believe standard IV is an overview on the legal and illegal aspects of technology in education and how we, as teachers, need to make sure we (and our students) are aware of the correct way to encorporate technology without breaking the law and ethical practices. To access the linked projects, you can either click on the picture in the artifacts box on the left side or on the paragraph heading in the list below.

  • Instructional Technology Plan. This plan was for a school district over three years. Included in this plan were strategies on how to incorporate technology into the classroom as well as funding strategies. There was also a portion on copyright policies and other technology policies. I believe this project met this standard by showing how important policies can be incorporated into the school as well as how to develop learning strategies for students that have learning disabilities. This project stretched my thinking into areas I didn't even realize a technology plan would include.

  • Copyright and Fair Usage. This paper focused on a common ethics issue such as copyright and fair usage. The topic was researched how I would apply this topic to future classes. I believe this standard has been met by this project by researching Copyright and Fair Use to make me more familiar with the topic and know what not to do in my classroom and work.

  • Podcast Lecture. This tool can be used to allow students who may have missed a lecture to still have access to missed materials. This tool can also archive lectures; so if students did not understand the topic, they can re-listen to the lecture multiple times to gain any information missed previous times. I believe this project meets this standard by giving students another means of learning a concept. Some students are visual learners and some are audio learners. The podcast can be used to reach out to the auditory learners.

Future Learning Goals

Standard IV is a challenge to me as an educator to stay on top of the legal and ethical usage of digital tools in the classroom. In the future, I will be more aware of how to use and not abuse digital tools in and out of the classroom. I am excited to encorporate podcasts, videos, blogs, and other tools to reach out to the many different types of learners in my classroom.
